Lambda Gamma Chapter History
In September of the 2003-2004 school year, a group of seven women gathered to discuss interest in forming a support group for multicultural women on campus. These seven women were; Diana Coronado, Liliana Hernandez, Susana Hernandez, Ana Martinez, Alejandra Mendez, Amy Molina, and Brenda Morales. These ladies decided to begin meeting on a regular basis to work towards the goal of becoming a recognized student organization on the University of Wyoming campus. They became known as Mujeres Unidas de Cultural Divinas (MUCD). The Campus Activities Center recognized this group as a student organization on Oct. 1st, 2003.
These ladies met weekly to discuss the requirements of becoming a colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. Susana Munoz was chosen to be the group’s advisor. Susana Munoz, Gamma Chapter alumna, has helped many chapters get established and has served on the National Board of Sigma Lambda Gamma. In April of the 2004 spring semester, 12 women petitioned for colony status to be granted at the University of Wyoming. The 12 women were; Diana Cordonado, Reinette Curry, Becky Garcia, Liliana Hernandez, Susana Hernandez, Ana Martinez, Traci Martinez, Alejandra Mendez, Amy Molina, Brenda Morales, Maricella Sanchez, and Victoria Sandoval. These women were granted colony status by the Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. at the national meeting on July 29th, 2004 at 10:00a.m. |
In the fall semester of 2004, there were ten women left. These women are now recognized as the founders. On October 16th, 2004 the ten founding women participated in an induction ceremony at the University of Wyoming Student Union at 9:30p.m. These women were Brenda Morales, Alejandra Mendez, Amy Molina, Liliana Hernandez, Maricella Sanchez, Susana Hernandez, Traci Martinez, Diana Cordonado, Reinette Curry, and Ana Martinez. They participated in many fundraiser throughout the year. They co-sponsored campus activities such as: Mujeres de Juarez Caravan Crusade for Social Justice, Children's Art Museum Christmas Decorating, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.During that school year thay worked on recruiting new members and gained five new members. On April 9,2005 the founding line joined the Sigma Lambda Gamma Sisterhood and completed the educational process with the help of District Governor Sister Joy Reyes, Delta Beta alumna, and Sister Rosa Garcia, Kappa Alpha alumna. The ceremony was held at the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. On April 18th of 2005, Alpha line was initiated into Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority at 6:18 p.m. at the Cooper Mansion.
